Bike shops are essential businesses!

Across the nation, the work of bike shops has been listed as essential services in stay-at-home ordinances enacted to protect the health, safety and welfare of citizens. Charleston Moves firmly agrees with that position. Communities always need the skills of bike shop technicians to repair and maintain our bicycles, and that is particularly imperative during times of crisis.

Many Charlestonians rely solely on bicycles for transportation, and cannot afford to lose maintenance service now. Others need bicycles as replacement transportation, or to get exercise while practicing social distancing.

As local municipalities and the state of South Carolina have considered which businesses are “essential,” Charleston Moves has coordinated with elected officials, government staff and bike shop owners to ensure that bike repair, maintenance and sales can continue. While different municipalities and the state have enacted different types of policies, one of the common denominators is that bike shops may continue to operate. We are grateful to the elected officials and staff members with the City of Charleston, Town of Mount Pleasant, Senator Kimpson’s office and the Office of the Governor who have assisted to include all elements of transportation maintenance as essential business.

Below is the most recent information we have on the operations of our local bike shops. We will update this as we are able. Shops are stressing the need for customers to be patient. With stringent cleaning requirements and changes in policies, as well as a large increase in bike ridership and service needs, they are working as quickly as they can.
