FILLING A CRITICAL GAP

The Wappoo Cut Bridge is located along Folly Road between West Ashley and James Island. While it has sidewalks leading to it, and a maintenance path across, the space is too narrow and close to fast-moving vehicles. This is a key corridor that links destinations with existing infrastructure and pending projects, including:

  • the West Ashley Greenway
  • the Maryville Bikeway
  • the new Ashley River Bicycle & Pedestrian Bridge
  • McLeod Plantation
  • Rethink Folly Road improvements
  • Maybank Highway complete streets work
  • James Island County Park

Despite progress and opportunities on both sides, this bridge remains a barrier. Check out our Progress Map to see the benefits of unlocking access for all across the Cut.

While Charleston Moves submitted a technical assistance grant application to the National Park Service (NPS) in March 2022 to determine the best way to tackle this crossing, we learned in May 2022 that we were not selected for assistance by the agency. As we continue to build grassroots support, we are assessing other options to fund the necessary study.
