Calhoun Street audit

In March 2020, the Charleston Moves team joined the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) and their consultants, the Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester Council of Governments (BCDCOG), the City of Charleston, the Charleston Police Department, MUSC, the Charleston Medical District, the College of Charleston and the Ronald McDonald House on a Road Safety Audit (RSA) of Calhoun Street. This street is the 4th most dangerous corridor in the state for people walking and biking. The intent of the RSA is to assess the conditions and make suggestions for improvement in order to make the road safe and functional for all users. Charleston Moves supplied relevant data from our “Close Calls” database. Planners and engineers across agencies will rely on this document as they develop safety improvement projects for the corridor. Included in the RSA are existing plans as well, such as People Pedal. Both the City and state have begun developing projects for implementation out of the report, and elements of the report are also included as the BCDCOG continues to design the bus rapid transit route down Calhoun.

After several public input opportunities, on 8/15, City Council has deferred signing the required municipal agreement with SCDOT to proceed with recommended safety improvement concepts. Please see the latest on this issue HERE.
