Remount Road – Road Safety Assessment Public Meeting

On July 9, 2026, SCDOT is hosting a public information meeting to share their recommendations to improve safety of Remount Road, based on their 2025 Road Safety Audit findings. This in-person meeting will be on July 9, 5-7 pm (drop-in) at Matilda Dunston Elementary (1825 Remount Road, 29406). Additional details can be found HERE. This is a really important corridor with a lot of planned and programmed improvements that need to coordinate and center vulnerable road users.

  • Remount’s eastern terminus is at Virginia Avenue, which delineates the 526 Lowcountry Corridor East versus West segments. SCDOT has committed to building a dedicated multi-use path over the I-526 river crossings associated with this proposed highway widening project. Connectivity for vulnerable road users between this project and nearby neighborhoods and destinations is critical for public safety and access.
  • Remount’s western terminus extends just past Rivers Avenue, the spine of the state’s first mass transit system: Lowcountry Rapid Transit. Similarly, bicycle and pedestrian connectivity between this project and nearby residential and commercial nodes is crucial.
  • The BCDCOG is looking to complete a Remount Corridor Study that will have a focus on complete street improvements.
  • Remount Road has been added to SCDOT’s 2027 Pavement Improvement list, which opens the door for a potential restriping to accommodate multiple modes within the cross-section.

In June 2026, SCDOT is hosting a public information meeting to share proposed concepts to improve safety of the corridor.

In February 2025, Charleston Moves staff joined the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) and their consultants, as well as USDOT, the City of North Charleston, the Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester Council of Governments (BCDCOG), Charleston County and the City of Hanahan, for a Road Safety Audit of Remount Road from Rivers Avenue to North Rhett Avenue.

The recent bike/ped crash summary for this corridor includes 27 pedestrians (6 of which resulted in serious injuries or fatalities), and 9 people on bicycles (1 of which resulted in serious injuries).
