King Street from Line Street to Huger Street
In March 2021, after several fatalities of people walking and biking along this corridor, the Charleston Moves team joined the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT), the Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester Council of Governments (BCDCOG), and the City of Charleston on a Road Safety Review of King Street from Line Street to Huger Street. While not a formal audit, the intent of the review is to assess the conditions and make suggestions for improvement in order to make the road safe and functional for all users. Charleston Moves supplied relevant data from our “Close Calls” database. Planners and engineers across agencies will rely on this document as they develop safety improvement projects for the corridor. Included in the review are existing plans as well, such as People Pedal.
We are grateful to Charleston County Transportation Committee (CTC) for approving the necessary funding to allow SCDOT to conduct a safety and traffic operations study to determine which recommendations from the Road Safety Review are feasible. This vote took place on August 10, 2021 and is allocated from the CTC’s 2022 budget.
