Dorchester Road Audit

History + The Latest

In April 2023, Charleston Moves staff joined the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) and their consultants, as well as the City of North Charleston, Charleston County and the Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester Council of Governments (BCDCOG), for a Road Safety Audit of Dorchester Road from Kent Avenue to the Dorchester County line. We’ve proposed various bike/ped improvements, including the likes of a multi-use path, better CARTA access, access management (eliminating driveways and slip lanes), people-oriented intersections, narrowed travel lanes, and more.

In October 2024, the consultant hired by SCDOT to coordinate the audit completed their report, and hosted a public input meeting, coordinated with Charleston County’s proposal for a segment of Dorchester Road from the Dorchester County line to Michaux Parkway. SCDOT’s concepts are here, and Charleston County’s proposal is here

The section of Dorchester Road that covers both of these projects experienced 3,173 vehicular, 40 pedestrian, and 30 bicycle crashes from January 2018 to December 2022. 924 crashes resulted in injury and 17 crashes resulted in a fatality.

SCDOT is currently coordinating public comments received. Charleston County is developing their preliminary design and environmental permitting; their segment is funded by the current Transportation Sales Tax (TST).
