A bike-friendly region is a healthy, active, fun place to live, work and visit. We are about creating community connection and making it easier for people who choose to bike or walk, or who have no choice but to, to do so safely.

Legare Bridge retrofit project approved

Posted June 2, 2013 / Kurt Cavanaugh

Charleston County Council has approved funding for the Legare Bridge retrofit project, the plan to re-assign one of four lanes on the northbound Route 17 Bridge over the Ashley River. Construction plans are nearly complete, so our best guess is that work could proceed soon if at least one engineering problem is resolved. That problem is whether, or how, to route cyclists and pedestrians across the ramp used by cars exiting onto southbound Lockwood Blvd.

On our map, the preferred route would take bike/ped traffic across that ramp, toward Bee Street, in the heart of the MUSC campus (yellow arrow in image above). An alternate route would eliminate the need to cross the ramp and route bike-ped traffic further south on Lockwood toward a safer crossing.

The overall route connects to the West Ashley Greenway at Albemarle, follows Albemarle toward Folly Rd., cuts through across property currently occupied by Turky’s Towing, toward and onto the bridge (The Turky’s property will be occupied by a new development containing a small city-owned park).

More on this project can be found on our Facebook page as we obtain further information.
